Reconfiguration of Mihai Viteazul Square

Transforming a traffic node into a civic and ecological hub

The Challenge and Approach

Mihai Viteazul Square, a central road junction in a university city, suffered from severe fragmentation of public space, dominated by cars and lacking identity. The challenge was to reconcile traffic flow with the community's need for a place to meet, relax, and host cultural activities. We adopted an integrated planning approach, which put people and ecology first. We analyzed circulation patterns, pedestrian behavior, and the area's climatic potential. The central concept was the introduction of a "green ring" – a continuous band of vegetation, seating, and bicycle lanes surrounding the square, separating its rest areas from transit zones. We opted for low-carbon footprint construction materials, such as recycled concrete for paving and thermo-modified wood for street furniture.

Results and Impact

The project radically transformed the square. The area dedicated exclusively to pedestrians increased by 40%, and the green space index per resident in the area doubled. The implementation of the Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) reduced stormwater runoff into the network by 60%. The square has become an attraction, now hosting weekly local produce markets and seasonal cultural events. Active mobility increased significantly, with a 25% increase in bicycle use for daily commutes to the center. The project serves as a case study for community-centered urban regeneration and was presented at the National Sustainable Urban Planning Conference. Ongoing citizen feedback confirms the success in creating a lively, safe, and resilient public space.
